Fact Sheet: Beyond Soil Carbon
Building soil carbon is a long-term process, particularly in the sandy, low-clay soils common across the WA Wheatbelt. But practices that support soil carbon can deliver other benefits along the way.
This fact sheet brings together findings from two Soil CRC research projects investigating how soil amelioration, amendments and plant diversity can influence soil carbon, soil function and resilience.
Long-term field trials tested practices including deep ripping, rotary spading, mouldboard ploughing, clay and organic amendments, legumes, intercropping, crop rotations and cover crops. The research found that there is no single or quick pathway to increasing soil carbon, with outcomes varying according to soil constraints, management and seasonal conditions.
Explore what the research found, the potential benefits and trade-offs of different management approaches, and what growers should consider when making decisions about soil carbon.
